01. What is TRI AMSTERDAM?

On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Park Somerlust on the Amstel River and Bella Vista Park will be the setting for TRI AMSTERDAM. It’s a triathlon celebration in the broadest sense of the word. Approximately 1,500 triathletes, spread across several waves, will be at the starting line for both the Middle and Standard distances of TRI AMSTERDAM.

TRI AMSTERDAM is the ideal introduction to triathlon and a truly unique experience for any athlete. This year, the event offers the Standard distance: a 1,500-meter swim, 42 km bike ride, and a 10 km run. Have you participated in a triathlon before and want to push your limits? Then the Middle distance might be a great challenge! A Middle distance triathlon involves a 1,900-meter swim, a 90 km bike ride, and a 21.1 km run. TRI AMSTERDAM is an official NTB (Dutch Triathlon Federation) event and is organized by the TRI HARD Series.

02. Who can participate at TRI AMSTERDAM?

All athletes aged 16 or older who can swim 1500 meters, cycle 40 km, and run 10 km are eligible to participate in the Standard distance at TRI AMSTERDAM.

03. What distance is right for me?

Registered for TRI AMSTERDAM but unable to attend?

  • Do you have a cancellation option? Send us an email at info@trihard.nl and we’ll arrange a refund.
  • If you don’t have a cancellation option, you may be able to transfer your registration to another race. You can read how this works in our terms and conditions.

It is not possible to sell purchased registration tickets or have them transferred to someone else’s name.

13. How does time registration work?

We use the Mylaps ProChip system for timekeeping. When you register, please indicate whether you have your own (red) ProChip or whether you would like to rent one from us. If you rent a chip, it will be included in the starting supplies envelope that you will collect at the registration desk on race day. You wear the chip on your left ankle so it doesn’t bother you during your triathlon.

After the race, please return the rental chip when you pick up your bike from the transition area. It is very important that you only return it there. A €25 charge will be applied for chips that are not registered again (even if you lost your chip during the race).

NOTE: Unlike previous seasons, from 2020 onwards, it will no longer be possible to use your own ChampionChip for races in the TRI HARD Series.

14. Do I have to lock my bike?

No, that’s not necessary. You should park your bike in the designated spot in the transition area. There will always be security guards present there.

15. Where do I leave my stuff?

We recommend bringing only essential items to the event site. It is not permitted to leave bags near your bike. At TRI AMSTERDAM, you can leave a bag at the bag drop-off point near the transition area. This area is constantly monitored and closed to the public.

You can store items you need during the race near your bike, in your designated spot in the transition area.

16. What is the best way for transitioning?

Make sure you remember where your bike is. To make it easier to grab your gear, it’s wise to hang items on your bike, put everything on the same side of the bike, and put everything in the correct order.

Want to practice transitioning? We offer transition clinics at all our races. During these clinics, you’ll receive instruction from an experienced triathlete and get the chance to practice the various aspects of a proper transition. You’ll get tips on how to properly place your gear and practice walking with your bike in hand. This way, you’ll feel even more confident at the start of your first triathlon.

Look at the page Wisselclinics for all information.

18. What is drafting? And is it allowed at TRI AMSTERDAM?

“Drafting” refers to an athlete cycling closely behind another to reduce air resistance. This is prohibited in all TRI HARD races*. A distance of 12 meters must always be maintained from the front wheel of the rider in front. Overtaking is, of course, permitted.

*With the exception of Dutch Championships and competitions in the Team Competitions and Youth and Junior Circuit. Different rules apply in some cases.

19. How do I stay warm after swimming?

Actually, mostly by cycling really hard. Of course, you can also bring a small towel so you can quickly dry off during your transition from swimming to cycling.

NOTE: Wear a tri-suit. This is not only comfortable (it fits well in all parts), but it’s also made of quick-drying material.

20. Should I practice transitioning?

You’ve trained hard in swimming, cycling, and running to achieve a fantastic performance in your triathlon. It would be a real shame to waste a lot of time transitioning between the different events. That’s why we definitely recommend practicing transitions.

We offer transition clinics at several of our races. During these clinics, you’ll receive instruction from an experienced triathlete and have the opportunity to thoroughly practice the various aspects of a good transition. You’ll receive tips on how to properly store your gear and practice walking with your bike in hand. This way, you’ll feel even more confident at the start of your first triathlon.

For more information, visit transition clinics.

21. What is the best way to train?

Good preparation is different for everyone. What works for you depends on your aptitude, build, athletic background, and of course, the time you can and want to dedicate to training. Therefore, we can’t tell you the best way to train. However, we do have a few tips for good preparation:

  • Build in regular training sessions. This way, your body gets used to a regular rhythm, and you’ll find it becomes easier and easier to start training.
  • Build up gradually. If you don’t exercise much or at all, it’s unwise to suddenly train three or four times a week. Build up gradually, allowing your body to adjust to the exertion.
  • Start early. To build up gradually and still be sufficiently prepared, it’s best to start training at least 10 weeks before the competition (in the case of a Sprint).
  • Find a training schedule that suits you. Of course, you can also decide for yourself how you want to train, but it can be helpful to have some guidance.

For more tips on getting started, check out the website of the Dutch Triathlon Federation.

22. Do I need a schedule to prepare?

Good preparation is different for everyone. Training schedules can help you get in top shape at the start of a triathlon, but the most important thing is that you enjoy the sport. Only then can you stay motivated to train.

For training schedules and other tips to get you started, check out the website of the Dutch Triathlon Federation.

23. What do I need for a triathlon?

For the cycling leg, you can use regular cycling shoes that clip into your bike, but this isn’t necessary. You can also complete the cycling leg with regular (athletic) shoes.

For the running leg, we highly recommend using good running shoes. This prevents injuries to your feet and legs.

25. I don’t have a racing bike, can I still participate in a TRI HARD competition?

Absolutely! If you don’t have a racing bike, that’s no problem: you can also use your own city bike.

  5. Complete the payment. The bike rental has now been added to your registration.

It’s possible to rent a racing bike up to 10 days before the race. After that, it’s no longer possible to request a racing bike via us.

30. Can I also participate with a license from another sports association?

Yes, you can participate in the Sprint or Standard distance if you have a competition license from the KNZB, KNWU, or KNAU.

To participate in the Middle distance, you must have an Athlete’s License from the NTB or you can purchase a day license.

31. I have a license through a triathlon federation abroad. Can I participate with this?

Yes, if you have a competition license from a foreign triathlon federation, you can participate in this competition

32. What do I do with my bib number?

When doing a triathlon, you wear your bib number on your back for cycling and on your chest for running. The easiest way to wear your bib number is with a bib number belt. This is an elastic band you wear around your waist to which the number can be attached. When you switch from cycling to running, simply turn the belt, and the bib number will automatically be in the correct position. It’s so easy!

The bib number belt can be ordered in advance in the Njuko registration area. The TRI HARD bib number belt can be purchased at the registration desk on race day.

34. What are the time limits for TRI AMSTERDAM?

There are no time limits at TRI AMSTERDAM. Just make sure you’ve trained enough to cover the distance!

35. How can you download the GPX file?

The GPX file can be found on the page with the course information. You can download the file by right-clicking and saving it. You can then open the file on your computer.

36. Where can I find photos of the event?

Marathon-Photos is the official photographer for TRI AMSTERDAM. All participants will be photographed at various points along the course and, of course, at the finish line. Personal videos will also be taken. So make sure your race number is clearly visible and smile for the camera. The link where you can view and order the photos and videos can be found on your results page.
